CARNIVAL: LEARN FROM THE PAST, VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Friends of the Pan Am Path, have partnered with one of Toronto's most unique and innovative spaces, The Bentway for a one-day, multigenerational event exploring the historical significance of carnival season through traditional performance, storytelling and visioning for the future using new technologies including virtual reality and 3D printing.

Located five-minutes north of the Pan Am Path, the multi-sensory experience will transform the east-side of The Bentway into a place for learning, sharing and enjoyment for the whole family from 2pm to 9pm on Saturday, July 28th.

The highlight of the event features Viey la cou, a traditional masquerade of Ole Mas characters led by actor, director and storyteller, Rhoma Spencer. The performance will take guests through an engaging performance of Caribbean traditions complete with an upbeat rhythm section by Hornman International at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm throughout the evening.

Future visions of carnival will be explored through new mediums including a display of 3D printed costumes by the Inkwell Project, a joint partnership with SugaCayne Designs and Ryerson University's Design Fabrication Zone (DFZ). Their projects are designed to find harmony between traditional Caribbean carnival costume design and innovative technology.

The family-friendly event will also feature socacize classes by Ayanna Lee-Rivears, a mini mas camp for on-site carnival creations, artwork by local artists and a virtual reality experience.

DJ Dre Ngozi will follow up the evening paying homage to the Caribbean diaspora through Caribbean sound and music. Delicious traditional food and drinks will also be available.

The Bac & All Festival is sponsored by The Bentway and Ontario Trillium Fund.

The event is  part of the Untold Futures series by Friends of the Pan Am Path, supported by the Toronto Foundation and Ontario Trillium Fund.
